Mileydy Artiles
Site specific and interactive work
“Untitled” combines Mileydy’s experience of documentary filmmaking with the narrative freedom found in art installations. Here, she employs interactivity to break free from the dogmatic structure of traditional storytelling. In creating art that is physical in nature and outside of traditional media, she attempts to immerse viewers in the perspective of her subjects: audience members are challenged to call themselves into question, as ideological presuppositions impose themselves onto their own lives. Mileydy has opened an invitation for us to participate in the subject’s story.
In her practice as a filmmaker, Mileydy Artiles often explores the tension between feminine gender expression versus feminine gender identity. She studies the relationship between gender expression and media reproduction of the same: there is a deep-seated anxiety toward this media representation of feminine gender expression. This neurosis stems from the realization that much of the contemporary media landscape is produced and directed under a male gaze. That is to say, much of the media produced in our contemporary society is created by cis-gendered, heterosexual men for the benefit of other cis-gendered, heterosexual men. Artiles wants to bring attention to the limitations of this warped perception: she highlights how this narrow view of the female skews feminine gender expression in the media. With “Untitled” she demonstrates how the corrupted representation of the female image in male media results in unrealistic expectations of feminine gender identity for all of us in everyday life. The tensions explored by her work are thus existential: the essence of gender identity is called into question in a world inundated by fabricated representations of female gender expression.
