Overview

In my work, everything has a specific meaning, and what is apparently innocuous becomes transcendental and essential, because in the production process of the piece I give equal importance to all those elements that can influence both the final interpretation of its content as in the materialization of the form.

I am interested in captivating the viewer from an aesthetic point of view, that beauty acts as a common factor in all my works, and in manipulating the apparent vacuity that beauty can contain in order to use it as the main camouflage strategy that becomes a concern for issues that are quite complex. The complexity of these issues that I deal with is constantly nourished by society and power structures to narrate and enunciate those problems that affect the individual today and with which we are practically forced to deal. Examples of the above, and which have been recurring themes in my work, could be the illicit behaviors that are a consequence of the benefits granted by participation in power, in any of the strata in which they are exercised. The multiple faces in which crime, domination and the image of power in its multiple variants are masked constitute an obsession for me. The defense of individual liberties in the different possible scenarios; either from the relationships of the individual with their peers, whether between the mass media with society, or between governments and their citizens, obviously analyzing the legal corpus of each society with which I interact, are the main motivations in the research that supports all the conceptual scaffolding that crystallizes in the work that I propose each time.
Biography

The work of Lorena Gutiérrez (Havana, 1987) explores in the first instance the most questionable spaces, sometimes sordid, of the political and social life of her country; and from that apparently local geography she radiates global reflections.

The topics that attract her are those that place the “truths” inculcated by power and the media on ambivalent grounds. She is also rightly concerned with the legal corpora according to which justice is exercised. Her works, mostly of an installation nature, are designed to intervene in specific spaces and turn them into environments of doubt, fragility and risk. The excellent workmanship of her objects and sculptures, and the predilection for sparkle, color and minimalism in her paintings, do not prevent her from revealing her intentions. Moving to Madrid in 2019, she has been expanding her worldview, expanding the research that feeds her work to other fields.

She has exhibited, among others, at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana; the Museum of Art & Design, Miami Dade College, Miami; the IDB Cultural Center, Washington, DC and the 10th. Berlin Biennale. Her work is in the collection of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Vienna
