Born in 1911, Mallica Reynolds, known as Kapo, began painting in 1947 and quickly moved to wood carving and sculpture. Kapo, a revivalist leader, got much of his inspiration from the movement which combines African and Christian beliefs. His sculpture embodied the movement, the sentiment and fervor of the movement. He moved back to painting in the 1960’s as his skill for sculpture declined. Kapo is one of the top Intuitive artists to arise in Jamaica at the time and he has been recognized with several honors as well as an Order of Distinction.
