Upcoming Exhibition- Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes at PAMM

Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes is an exhibition project involving a series of new works generated over the past year by the Haitian-born, Miami-based artist Edouard Duval-Carrié (b. 1954). Known for his innovative adaptions of traditional Haitian iconography, which he engages in order to address contemporary social and political conditions, Duval-Carrié is presenting a series of large-scale paintings and sculptures. Contrasting his signature use of strong colors, this project presents works executed entirely in black and silver glitter. Involving extensive research, Imagined Landscapes presents lush tropical scenes that reference specific nineteenth-century paintings executed in the Caribbean and Florida. These paintings, by artists such as William Heade and Frederick Church, were commissioned as part of Colonial interests in promoting economic development of these areas of the world. The artists used pictorial effects, imagination and fictions to present the Caribbean as the “New Eden,” a fertile land of possibility. Duval-Carrié’s works translate these historical images into his own contemporary aesthetic language, in order to address the manner in which the tropics of the Caribbean and Florida continue to be sold as tropical paradises, in ways that often obscure economic and social disparities that continue to be perpetuated in these contexts.

Gallery Artist Leon Ferrari shows at MOMA New York

Tangled Alphabets: León Ferrari and Mira Schendel
April 5, 2009–June 15, 2009
The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art Exhibition Gallery, sixth floor

León Ferrari (Argentine, b. 1920) and Mira Schendel (Brazilian, b. Switzerland, 1919–1988) are considered among the most significant artists working in Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century. Their works address language as a major visual subject matter: the visual body of language, the embodiment of voices as words and gestures, and language as a metaphor of the worldly aspect of human existence through the eloquence of naming and writing. They produced their works in the neighboring countries of Argentina and Brazil throughout the 1960s and 1980s, when the question of language was particularly central to Western culture due to the central role taken by post-structuralism, semiotics, and the philosophy of language. Although their drawings, sculptures, and paintings are contemporary with the birth of Conceptualism, they are distinctively different, and have not yet been exhibited in their entirety in the United States. www.moma.org

Rusty Scruby Solo Exhibit at the MAC

We at Pan American are so excited to present not one, but two solo exhibitions of new work by gallery artist Rusty Scruby. At Pan American Art Projects, we will showcase Scruby’s latest body of work in his third solo exhibition with us. Simultaneously, Scruby will display large-scale installation works in both the large and square galleries at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary. Please join us for the opening reception Friday, January 9 from 5:30 – 7:30 at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary located at 3120 McKinney Avenue, Dallas, Texas.

Rusty Scruby’s innovative three-dimensional constructions are a fusion of his artistic and scientific ingenuity.  A former student of both aerospace engineering and music composition, Scruby manifests these skills into his work, producing an intricate harmony of math and music. Scruby’s installation at the MAC affords Scruby the ability to realize his creative visions without limits in Dallas’s premiere non-profit venue. Off the wall, three-dimensional reconstructions will oblige the viewer to move around them and experience the works from every angle.

Rusty Scruby at the Kohler Art Center

Focusing on photography, this exhibition will feature works by artists who demonstrate this medium’s rapidly expanding boundaries. With a basis in models or sets that produce a constructed image or with the employment of innovative processes including multiple exposures, repeated or layered negatives, digital augmentation, or collaged prints in both two-dimensional and sculptural form, the works manipulate the medium to present a new reality that questions the veracity of “truthfulness” generally associated with photographic representation. This exhibition will be on view February 10 through May 3, 2008.
